Fall in love, break the curse.
Cursed by a powerful enchantress to repeat the autumn of his eighteenth year, Prince Rhen, the heir of Emberfall, thought he could be saved easily if a girl fell for him. But that was before he turned into a vicious beast hell-bent on destruction. Before he destroyed his castle, his family, and every last shred of hope.
Nothing has ever been easy for Harper. With her father long gone, her mother dying, and her brother constantly underestimating her because of her cerebral palsy, Harper learned to be tough enough to survive. When she tries to save a stranger on the streets of Washington, DC, she’s pulled into a magical world.
Break the curse, save the kingdom.
Harper doesn’t know where she is or what to believe. A prince? A curse? A monster? As she spends time with Rhen in this enchanted land, she begins to understand what’s at stake. And as Rhen realizes Harper is not just another girl to charm, his hope comes flooding back. But powerful forces are standing against Emberfall . . . and it will take more than a broken curse to save Harper, Rhen, and his people from utter ruin.
Honestly it was the cover that caught my attention first and the title that caught it next. For those that don’t know, A Curse So Dark And Lonely is a re-telling of The Beauty And The Beast. At first I was skeptical because there have been so many novels written under the same premise that it was starting to get repetitive for me. However, I ended up liking this rendition because I felt that this re-telling was quite similar to the original – I’d call it a true re-telling with a twist.
The characters in this story were mostly likeable. I really appreciated the representation of cerebral palsy in the main character, Harper. Including cerebral palsy in the story allowed the reader to empathize with her while realizing how strong she was despite all things – it didn’t define who she was. Since I don’t know too much about cerebral palsy I would have liked to have been given more insight into how it affects her physically and mentally. At times I felt as though the cerebral palsy aspect of the story was just put there and didn’t add much to the plot.
HARPER & RHEN – I enjoyed their growing relationship. It didn’t seem forced, but I must admit that I’m not sold and haven’t fully fallen for them yet. I want to see more depth in their relationship and understand why Harper might feel drawn to him. As a reader, I know that Harper likes him but I can’t fully relate to her because I don’t feel as though the writing has made me fall in love with him as well (yet). Looking forward to seeing more chemistry in the next books.
HARPER & GREY – I really liked their relationship! From the get go, it seemed like Harper was most comfortable around Grey and had things in common with him (playing cards). Admittedly, I didn’t even realize that they were a love triangle until I read reviews from other people – I thought it was just friendship and respect. With what is revealed at the end of the book, I’m wondering how (and if) their relationship dynamic will change in the next books.
HARPER & JAKE/NOAH – I liked that they were (realistically) defiant and hesitant in going to Emberfall but fell right into place when they got there. They seem like great people with skills that can be very helpful to the kingdom in the future.
The end of the story was good. Some books are good all the way until the ending and it completely ruins the entire thing. That didn’t happen with this book. A Curse So Dark And Lonely kept me hooked the entire journey through. The ending was a little bit of an OMG moment for me and I found it pretty satisfying.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. Although a little hesitant and skeptical of where the story will go and how the characters will grow, I am looking forward to reading the next one in the series!
